Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of seizing control of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final were frustrated as they settled for a 1-1 draw against a resilient Eintracht Frankfurt. Despite dominating the second half, Ange Postecoglou’s side couldn’t find the winning goal in front of a buzzing home crowd in London.
A Lightning Start from Frankfurt
This was the first European knockout meeting between the two sides since 1982, and it started with a bang. Just six minutes in, Frankfurt pounced. James Maddison was dispossessed by Ellyes Skhiri, who quickly launched a counterattack. His pass found Hugo Ekitike, and the Frenchman, full of confidence, cut inside and curled a stunner into the far corner – his 20th of the season.
Tottenham were rocked but not rattled. They responded quickly with Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson both going close. Their persistence was rewarded in the 26th minute. Solanke fed Maddison, who set up Pedro Porro with a cheeky backheel flick that brought Spurs level in style.

End-to-End Football but No Winner
The second half brought fireworks but no breakthrough. Destiny Udogie surged forward dangerously, while Jean-Mattéo Bahoya looked sharp for Frankfurt. However, Spurs looked more likely to score.
Lucas Bergvall cracked the crossbar with a thunderous long-range effort, and Son Heung-min forced a smart save from Kauã Santos. Then came another vast chance – Rodrigo Bentancur rose highest from a corner, but again, the crossbar denied Spurs.
Maddison, ever-creative, continued to unlock the Frankfurt defence, but Santos was in unbeatable form, denying both Maddison and Bentancur once more. Despite wave after wave of pressure, the German side clung on, relieved to escape with a draw.

Advantage Frankfurt – But All to Play for
Although Spurs will rue their missed chances, the tie is still wide open. The return leg at Deutsche Bank Park promises drama, with both teams knowing a moment of brilliance could be the difference.
For Frankfurt, taking a draw back to Germany after being second-best for large parts of the match feels like a win. It’s a missed opportunity for Tottenham, but their unbeaten home run in Europe now stretches to 19 games, which keeps morale high.
