The countdown to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections on December 7, 2024, has begun. The FKF Electoral Board is taking proactive steps to address stakeholder concerns. The board acknowledges rising apprehensions. It is committed to ensuring a smooth electoral process.
In a recent press statement, FKF Electoral Board Chairperson Hesbon Owilla emphasized the board’s dedication. He noted their focus on resolving disputes since it released the electoral calendar on October 2, 2024. “We have received numerous submissions. We are working around the clock to resolve them in line with the Electoral Code. Our goal is to deliver credible elections. These elections must serve the interests of all soccer lovers in Kenya,” Owilla stated.
Ongoing Dispute Resolution
Following the publication of the lists of clubs and delegates, the board has had many inquiries and complaints. The Electoral Board’s role involves compiling these lists and addressing any anomalies by seeking clarification and relevant documents from the branches. Owilla noted that the process is interactive, requiring close cooperation between branch officials and the FKF Secretariat.
The board is focused on addressing anomalies from the eligibility criteria for clubs. According to Owilla, the revised code states that clubs must show two consecutive seasons of participation. This adjustment has led to many submissions and complaints. The board is diligently working to resolve these issues.
Transparency and Accountability
Contrary to social media reports, the board is not dismissing petitions. Owilla reassured stakeholders that all queries have been addressed through physical hearings. “As of now, all submissions and petitions have been investigated. Decisions based on robust evidence have been communicated to the relevant petitioners,” he confirmed.
The FKF Electoral Board is also providing further avenues for dispute resolution. As outlined in the Electoral Code, stakeholders can appeal decisions made by the board at the Appeals Board level, which will be available from October 7, 2024. The Appeals Board, chaired by Ms. Janet Katisya, is ready to address any ongoing disputes. Stakeholders can submit their concerns via email at appeals@eb.footballkenya.org, along with the necessary payments as per the FKF Electoral Code.
Operating from Kandanda House
There are concerns about the board operating from Kandanda House, the FKF headquarters. Owilla clarified that, according to Section 3 1(g) of the FKF Electoral Code, the Electoral Board’s headquarters aligns with that of the FKF unless the board decides otherwise. This arrangement was ratified during the Special General Meeting held on August 24, 2024.
Commitment to Fair Elections
As the FKF elections draw near, Owilla reiterated the board’s commitment to conducting free, fair, transparent, credible, and verifiable elections. “We are counting on all stakeholders to support us in achieving this core mandate, ensuring that the upcoming elections will strengthen football in Kenya and pave the way for its continued growth and development,” he affirmed.
With the FKF Electoral Board addressing stakeholder concerns and emphasizing transparency, the football community in Kenya can look forward to a credible electoral process that will shape the future of the sport.
